In the Buddhist meditation practice of tonglen we willingly sit with those things we usually pull away from (feelings of fear, worries about the future, physical discomfort, etc.) and mentally send out into the world with our breath those things we often want to hang on to (feelings of contentment, peace, joy, happiness, etc.). The practice is dedicated to alleviating suffering through the willingness to be with what is. It is done both for ourselves when we are suffering and for others, wherever they are, who are also suffering something similar. One of the feelings I often pull away from is tiredness and the fear that I will simply never be able to rest. When I write within the pattern of tonglen I try to open to concrete images, emblematic moments that hold the feelings I am trying to be with and send out. So I write,
